In this course you will be introduced to different cryptographic primitives and their applications in building secure communications. This introductory course in cryptography is designed for students with no prior background in cryptography and requires only a minimal mathematical background. The course develops some of the fundamental concepts of modern cryptography in an accessible and self-contained manner.
The outline of the topics covered in this course:
- Block cipher and encryption modes; Introduction to TLS; Message authentication and encryption in TLS; Encryption (mode) of Telegram; Cryptanalytic attacks on (selected) encryption modes and their real-world effect
- Hash functions and applications; Time memory tradeoff attacks; Cryptanalytic attacks on MD4/5
- Public key cryptography: RSA, Diffie-Hellman, Digital Signature; PKI and CA authority; Forging certificates
- PRNG, PRNG with crypto libraries; PRNG in linux systems; Breaking PRNGs
- SSL library for cryptographic functions
- Key-derivation function (KDF); HKDF and application in Signal protocol
.Evaluation.
The evaluation is based on three written quizzes, scheduled for 5 November 2026, 10 December 2026, and 28 January 2027. Sample questions for the quizzes will be made available on OLAT..Meeting.
If you would like to meet outside lecture hours to discuss questions or concerns related to the course, please email me in advance to schedule an appointment during consultation hours.Zeitplan
